Airplane accidents, though rare, are still very serious incidents that do occasionally occur and often serious injure or kill the people onboard. Because planes fly so high above the ground and travel at such fast velocities, in-flight incidents are very unlikely to have any survivors. For every 100,000 flight hours, there are, on average, between 6 and 9 plane accidents. Of these, 43% occur in-flight, 12% occur on takeoff, and 45% occur during landing.Causes of Airplane Accidents
There are number of different causes of plane crashes. Typically, these incidents result from negligence on the part of the pilot, the airplane manufacturer, the plane maintenance crew, or other individuals involved with the upkeep, design, transport, or building of an aircraft. For example, any of the following may be considered to be a negligence-related cause of an airplane accident:
· Pilot Error
· Pilot Intoxication
· Mechanical Defects or Malfunctions
· Air Traffic Controller Error
· Airline Negligence
All of the above may be considered to be acts of negligence. If you or someone you know has suffered an injury from a plane accident resulting from one of these causes, then you may have the basis for an airplane accident lawsuit.
Commercial Airlines vs. Private Pilots
Because commercial airlines are open to service the general public, the FAA has very strict regulations in place regarding pilot requirements and qualifications, inclement weather protocol, pilot intoxication, and plane maintenance. For these reasons, commercial airliners are considered to be much safer than private pilot-operated planes. For every million flight hours, commercial airliner accidents result in an average of 4.03 fatalities. For the same number of in-flight hours, general aviation (privately piloted aircrafts) results in an average of 22.43 deaths.***
