SHTA lauds - JetBlue flights
PHILIPSBURG--The St. Maarten Hospitality & Trade Association (SHTA) lauded the arrival of the inaugural flight of JetBlue to the island on January 17.
The additional airlift to the island brings many economic benefits, the association stated in a press release. According to a recent International Air and Transport Association (IATA) study, one Boeing 757 brings 840 jobs, US $97 million in business revenue and US $22 million in wages plus tax revenue. The impact for hospitality, hospitality-related and trade companies is enormous and SHTA also looks forward to involving more of the private sector in these initiatives.
JetBlue will have daily flights to the island from New York year-round with an Airbus 320 that can carry up to 140 passengers. JetBlue is the first low-fare carrier to offer flights between New York and St. Maarten. This opens the island to more service from the Northeast United States, the island s major market as detailed in TourMap, the islands tourism development report, SHTA stated.
The new service is the result of a public-private sector initiative and the association commended Commissioner of Tourism, Roy Marlin, Director of the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau Regina LaBega, and all the strategic partners that had been involved in the process of attracting Jet Blue to St. Maarten, including the French-side government, SHTA, Anguilla, St. Barths, Sonesta Maho Beach Resort and Casino, Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort and Casino and The Westin St. Maarten Dawn Beach Resort and Spa. ***
