Airlines claim to have lost a lot of money over the last several years, mostly due to fuel costs and poor economic situations. They don't want to raise ticket prices too much out of fear that there will be a huge loss of customers. Instead, airlines try rather devious ways to extract more money from the consumers' pocketbook. One of these methods is to charge a fee for checked luggage. Although for most international flights you are allowed to have two pieces of check in luggage at no extra charge, for domestic flights you could be slapped with unfair fees.
Usually your checked baggage must weight under 50 lbs or heavy fines will be charged. Some airlines allow you to have one checked bag for free, while others charge $15. The second checked bag typically costs an additional $25 and you could be charged $100 per piece for the 3rd, 4th and 5th checked bags and $200 per piece for the 6th checked bag and any additional pieces. You may not be told about these extra charges until you arrive at the airport, unless you read the fine print on your ticket.
To avoid these charges the obvious solutions are to refuse to fly with airlines that charge baggage check in fees, or not to check in any luggage with those that do.
Take only the essentials with you. If you can pack everything into your carry on luggage you'll beat the airlines at their own game. You can take two pieces of luggage with you on the plane as long as they fit under the seat in front of you or in the over head bin. Instead of taking one carry on bag, and checking in one other, you can avoid the fees and make both of them carry ons.
Before purchasing a flight ticket make absolutely certain that you know the airline's rules about luggage, or at the airport you could be greeted with an unpleasant surprise.
