Getting to the airport sounds like an easy task but the trip to the terminal can be fraught with complications and an unexpected flat tyre or traffic jam can result in a missed flight and frustrating rearrangement of travel plans.Around one in every eight travellers miss flights every year, resulting in considerable stress, inconvenience and expense. Your usual trip to the airport may be hassle free but it only takes a small hurdle to throw your plans into disarray.
Public transport strikes, cars and taxis breaking down or having punctures and sleeping in are some of the more common reasons why people end up missing an all important flight.
If you are unfortunate enough to miss a flight then there are a few things you can do to help the situation. The best thing is to get yourself to the airport anyway and take a trip to the customer service desk of the company you are flying with.
Some airlines operate 'rescue packages' which vary in terms of what they offer but generally speaking, allow you to catch the next available flight for a specified fee. Missing your flight can turn out to be a costly mistake not to mention the inconvenience caused by having to reshuffle your arrangements, particularly if you have other flight connections to meet.
Most good travel-insurance policies cover costs incurred due to missed flights, such as replacement tickets and accommodation, but only if there is good reason for missing the flight. A breakdown or accident en route to the airport or failed public transport usually qualify as acceptable but do check the details of your policy.
Missed flights are an occurrence best avoided altogether and this is a contributing factor in the increasingly popularity of airport hotels. Whether you're going on a business trip or simply jetting off for a well deserved holiday, you will need to get yourself to the airport in a timely fashion in order to catch your flight. This can prove especially troublesome if you need to travel during rush hour or at an unusual time in the middle of the night when you are usually safely tucked up in bed.
Airport hotels are an easy and effective way to take the hassle out of travel as you can stay close to the airport on the night before or after your flight.
Staying in a hotel which lies in close proximity to the airport means you have a short trip ahead of you when making your way to departures. Most airport hotels offer a shuttle service to the terminals and fewer complications are likely to arise if it only takes a few minutes to actually travel to the airport.
A few extra hours sleep is a strong possibility if staying in an airport hotel as you don't need to get up quite so early to travel. Many airport hotels also offer parking and accommodation packages which can work out to be a cost effective option.
