A380’s Test Flight Delights Passengers
The ``five-star hotel in the sky’’ fully satisfied Korean passengers who took part in A380’s test flight in Korea.
The super jumbo delighted Koreans took the tour flight Thursday with the country's flagship airline. Korean Air has ordered five A380s, which will be delivered from 2010.
Unlike a usual flight, the 400 passengers comprised of officials from Korean Air and Airbus, VIPs, journalists and regular citizens were encouraged to freely move around the aircraft to observe every nook and cranny, ascending and descending the stairs that connect the upper and lower decks of the double-decker.
The plane had the standard seat arrangement of an A380 _ 12 seats in first class, 64 in business class and 443 in economy class _ and the configuration and other amenities will differ from airline to airline.
Despite the number of seats _ 519, the largest ever _ the big fuselage guaranteed spaciousness. Even economy class seats were wider than those in other aircrafts. The areas around the welcome desk at the entrance of the plane and the first class bar were roomy enough to hold some 30 people.
Departing Incheon International Airport, the A380 plane headed for Jeju Island and returned after a 100 minute roundtrip.
Cameras installed on the tail of the aircraft showed the outside of the plane through audio and video on demand (AVOD) apparatus installed in each seat, so that passengers could see where the plane was going.
When taking off and landing, the plane made much less noise than other large-sized aircrafts. Takeoff and landing were also smooth, despite the plane’s huge size and weight of 560 tons, as 22 tires _ four more than a Boeing 747 _ disperse the weight to prevent damage to runways.
The first commercial operation of the A380 will be in the middle of October by Singapore Airlines.
